Rick is the owner of Sub-Aquatic Sports & Service (SASS, get it?) in Battle Creek MI. Rick became hooked on diving as a teenager when a friend's father threw a tank on Rick's back, said "don't hold your breath and have a great time". He's learned quite a bit more about scuba since then.
Rick has been a NAUI instructor since 1978 and is also a NAUI Course Director, teaching divers to become instructors throughout the country. He is also Sub-Aquatic's course director, overseeing all classes run through the store. Rick has developed accredited diving programs at Western Michigan University, Albion College, Kalamazoo College, Kalamazoo Valley Community College, Kellogg Community College and Lake Michigan College. In 2000, he started teaching technical dive courses making Sub-Aquatic Sports the 33rd Technical School for NAUI.
Rick has many passions and historical shipwrecks are at the top of the list. He has led over a dozen groups to Truk Lagoon and is one of the most frequented travelers to Bikini Atoll. He loves underwater photography and some of his work has been produced for various travel brochures such as Contintental Air lines Air Micronesia. An artist rendition of his photographs can be seen on stamps commissioned by the Marshall Islands government to depict Bikini's underwater treasures.
Rick holds positions for our local city government and is a Captain and mission pilot with the Civil Air Patrol, the auxiliary unit of the U.S. Air Force. When he's not diving or taking pictures, he's flying!
We hope to see you there next year, The Ford Seahorses.
